Arthur S. Jefferson, known to all his friends and family as Jeff, passed away at home in Sarasota, FL, January 7, 2016 with his loving wife Beverley Underwood by his side. Jeff was 91.
Born in Manhattan on June 1, 1924 to Richard and Alma Jefferson, Jeff moved to Rye, New York at the age of 2. After graduating from Harrison High School in 1942, Jeff entered the accelerated course at New York State Maritime Academy.
Upon graduation in 1943, Jeff joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a JG Lieutenent (navigation) aboard USS Thuban AKA19.
Following World War II, Jeff attended Duke University on the GI Bill.
Jeff was the first member of his family to graduate college.
After graduating from Duke, Jeff's love for the sea led him to his career in the Merchant Marine. He began with Farrell Lines. He was promoted to Captain in 1956 and for the next 37 years he held command of freighters and container ships. His career took him to Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Asia. Although he worked for several shipping lines, his years with Farrell Lines were those that he held most dear.
It was during his time in South Africa that he met and married his first wife, Catherine Marie (Millson) Jefferson, known as Marie. They moved to Rye where they raised their three children.
During his children's high school and college years he was a dedicated fan, never missing the chance to cheer them on in their sporting events.
Jeff and Marie were married for 37 years.
After retiring in 1993, they moved to Sarasota, Florida. Marie predeceased Jeff in 1995.
In 2000, Jeff married Beverley Underwood. They resided in Sarasota, Florida and vacationed in New Zealand.
Jeff was an avid carpenter and gardener. He had many hobbies including the ancient nautical art of scrimshaw. Later in life he took up woodcarving, creating realistic animals for his grandchildren and exquisite nativity figures.
Jeff was an active member of Siesta Key Chapel which became his spiritual home throughout his retirement.
Jeff is survived by his loving wife Beverley Underwood. He was the loving father of Karen Carlisle, Brett Jefferson and Janet Jefferson-Bailey, the loving father-in-law of Tim Carlisle and Catherine Jefferson and the beloved Poppie of Jack, Caley and Paige Carlisle; Tyler, Reese and Isabelle Jefferson, loved Poppa of Emma and Cole Bailey.
Jeff was also a beloved member of Beverley's extended family in New Zealand.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday January 16, 2016 at 11.00am at Siesta Key Chapel, Sarasota, Florida.
